Common Questions
Will my child actually compete? - The only thing that would prevent your student from competing would be their own effort. Regattas provide an opportunity to race other crews. These competitions provide an opportunity to enter multiple events (4+s, 8+s,) and even multiple boats into each event. When there are multiple entries in one event, the boat with the best chance of winning an event is typically designated an "A" boat and lesser boats "B", "C", etc. There may be circumstances where 10 rowers are vying for 8 seats in one boat, or 11 rowers are vying for 8 seats in two boats. While we make every effort to provide an alternative event for the rowers that were not selected for the boats in each event, logistics and scheduling will occasionally prohibit this. The coaches will do all they can to make your athlete competitive. Again it takes effort and discipline on your student’s part.
Can I afford it? - The team Booster Group is committed to reducing the cost burden to parents. Up to now the average cost has been $500 per season. With increased student participation, increased school funding and increased fund raising we hope to reduce this to $300 this fall.
How much travel is there? - Yes the majority of our races are outside the Pittsburgh area however most are within a three to four hour drive. A few may require an overnight stay. These are great opportunities for the kids to compete with many very good teams.
What should I bring to a race?
Recommended items include: binoculars, folding chairs, sunscreen, sunglases, hat, dress in layers depending on the weather, extra shoes, socks, clothes depending on the weather, rain gear, camera, pocket or wrist watch, newspaper/book to kill time, food/drinks as assigned by parent committee, driving directions to the course
How much work is in it for me as a parent? - It's up to you. We encourage every parent to attend the monthly Booster meetings, and help out with provisions for races. More importantly is to support your student athlete. There will be times that you'll hear "They're killing me", "I froze my butt off" , "I have blisters". I'm here to tell you it's all part of the process. After a good practice or performing a good piece in a race, "it's all good".
Are there college scholarships? - There are 84 division 1 and 15 division 2 colleges that offer rowing scholarships.
Can parents row? - As a mater of fact, yes. For more info
